What a sad, and unfortunate time it has been in the sports world the past six months. Athletes testing positive for banned substance,. there have been allegations of banned substances/drug use by athletes from fans, sports casters, writers and other athletes alike. Albert Pojols and Ryan Theriot head that particular list list (though there is no proof for the allegations). Still, other former athletes have been picked up for DUI (of which are Donte Satallworth, Bruce Smith, and Terrance Kinsey to name a few) . Than there are the murders of Steve McNair and Arto Gatti by their girl friends/ spouses. This doesn’t even address the craziness that has been going on in club sports, high school, park district athletic programs . In light of the recent events, a cry has gone up by some sports radio hosts, sports writers, and fans a like, “Something must be done about this.” Some spew that education from the individual/ major sports leagues can help solve this problem. Others insist that mandatory psychiatric testing of the players should be done. Give me a break! Well my answer is to the question is another question, “Really, what can be done?” What can be done that hasn’t been done or tried already. The programs are in place, they have been implemented for some time now, and still these kind of things happen. Plain and simple people and athletes alike make poor decisions.
For many, the answer to these problems are solved with basic education.. Park districts, schools (grammar, middle and high school), and professional sports ,have or have just introduced education programs for the athletes. Programs include but are not limited to,drug education, the effects of steroids, what substances are banned, to how to handle your money, how to deal with personal and business relationships as an athlete and many more. These people and programs mean well. Some, I am sure, have benefited greatly from being a part of these programs, yet still the crazy stuff is happening. What is the problem then? In my opinion, these kinds of things need to be taught at home, plain and simple. It starts before they are famous athletes, or even begin to play sports. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Uncle, and Guardian a like need to educate the children. It may not be on the exact subject manner for these children that are so young. A lot of it may be by example, but it is so important for youth to have foundation in their youth. And yes I know, even then problems and poor decisions may result even with this great education.
Even with educational programs, a great up bringing at home, bad decisions and terrible things happen, but in the end, it’s all about the decisions people make. Will I cheat, and take steroids or HGH, or will I work hard and improve without cheating? Will I go in my car after drinking 3, 4, or 5 martinis and drive, only to hit or strike someone dead or will I call a friend or a cab to go home? Will I get into a relationship that could or will hurt my marriage or reputation or walk away from it? It all comes down to choice. And with the foundation that starts at a very young age, the decisions people make seem to be made on a more positive level, though don’t always prevent bad things from happening. I am not perfect and believe I was raised right and have made poor decisions, but I know that I have made far less than I would have if I wasn’t raised the way I was. The decisions we can make a huge outcome in what happens today and the future. What kind of choice will you make today?

On my upcoming show, Friday Night, the topic of discussion will be: Should athletes be role models? If recent events are any indication, the answer is, NO! Lets see, Dontee Stalworth,Michael Philips, Plaxico Burress, Manny Ramirez, and even former athletes of the likes, Charles Barkley, Steve McNair, and OJ Simpson. The list goes on and on. Don’t get me wrong, no one is perfect. The average Joe does stupid things from time to time, everyone does. But it seems as if young and old sports fans a like equate sports figures as role models, instead of people that they can admire from what they can do on the sports fields, ice, or the courts.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some that could be considered “role models” in every walk of of life. Bakers, bankers, candlestick makers, custodians, mail men, moms, and dads, teachers to name a few. Many do great things for people, and live their lives as an example on what a role model is . However, even role models can come short of perfection. Many role models can make poor decisions, fall into temptations, so on and so forth. We all fall short, and their was only one man that walked this earth that was perfect from what I can recall. The whole point of this is that just because someone is a great can dunk, run the 100 meter dash in world record time, or rush for 1000 yards in a season doesn’t make them a role model. It’s all about how they live their life on and off the court, and to be honest, my role models are mainly those that i knew personally, I do admire many I don’t.
Another lesson to learn here is that mistakes, indiscretions, poor decisions can cost you. Whether it’s cheating on a spouse, your taxes, flipping out on someone, not picking up that banana peel, not studying canidate for an election and voting for him or her, can all cause you or someone else pain, doubt and even death.Choose wisely the decisions you make with your life. You could be letting yourself, family, and your friends down. Just a thought.

Recently, NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell said he is beginning to evaluate the return of Mike Vick, from indefinite suspension, to the NFL. Vick the former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons will have completed his sentence for “running a dog fighting ring” on July 20th and the comish won’t even talk to him about a reinstatement to the league until then at the earliest. It has been rumored that Vick may not even be talked to about his reinstatement to the league until the 2009 season has started. Has Vick paid the price? Should he be let back in to the league to play once again?
Vick, whom in his career has compiled 1,730 pass attempts, has thrown 93o completions for a total of 11,5o5 yards, a 53.8 completion perception, has thrown 71 touchdown passes and 52 interceptions, and is the all time leading rushing Qb in NFL history; is about to have completed a federal prison and home confinement sentence. Vick is also currently going through bankruptcy, and has been indefinitely been suspended from the game he loves. Many believe that he should never be allowed back into the league. Yes he has had a troubled past. Whether it be drugs, dog fighting, hanging out with thugs, or the very famous Ron Mexico incident (If you don’t what that is google it lol), but let’s take a real hard look at what he did and what others around the NFL have done.
The NFL is full of shady characters. There are wife beaters, thieves, drug abusers, cheaters, you name it. Some of them have never even been suspended or never have paid a price for their transgressions like Vick has, yet they are allowed to play. Vick was convicted for running a dog fighting ring. He didn’t murder anyone with a gun or was convicted of DUI manslaughter. Crap Stallworth got off with far less of a price than Vick did. Don’t get me wrong, if I was a GM and Vick was reinstated I wouldn’t be the first one knocking down his door to sign him. I do believe in second chances however. If Vick proves he is worthy he should get a second chance. If not this season it should be soon. Hopefully, Vick has learned from his decisions of the past and makes the most out of the opportunity if given the chance. Vick could be a great story, or he could be the NFL’s worst nightmare. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

A report surfaced last week that former Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Texas Rangers out fielder Sammy Sosa tested positive for a performance enhancing substance in the 2003 season, go figure. Like no one knew that it possible ? Remember in the 98 season, Sosa gained like 20 pounds, his body bursting with new found muscle and strength, give me a break. What amazes me is how some want every name from the steroid era to come out so they can be known to the world that they cheated. Would that change anything if that happened?
Yes there is a part of me that wants the names of the cheaters to be known, and made public for all the world to see. Someday that might happen, but truly, I hope the issue dies. For one, the owners and executives in baseball loved the steroid era. Just recovering from a strike, the so called cheaters of the home run chase brought much needed attention to the game. Plus, remember this, the players did nothing illegal. It may be hard to believe but true. The substances they took during this time were not illegal, nor were they banned at the time they took them. Was there behavior questionable? Sure it was, but they did nothing legally wrong(maybe morally however). That being said, the players knew they were getting an edge that they normally couldn’t have received on their own and that’s sad.
I wish in my heart of hearts that sports could be free of the BS, pristine, and something that would or could remain free of corruption, however that is just not possible. Maybe athletes present and future can learn something of baseballs steroid era. Maybe the owners can learn something as well. When one of their players test positive for a banned substance, cut them don’t pay them and sue the player for breach of contract. Do I think cheaters will still be involved in sports? Yes as long as there are sports there will be cheating. I just can hope that their are teams and players that do it the right way, without cheating and may they be lifted very high.

Note: This article was originally posted on Seahawks Nation Blog:
http://seahawknationblog.com/2009/06/houshmandzadehs-guarantee-gives-seahawk-fans-hope/
As the season draws closer, players make guarantees that usually get the fans of their teams excited for the upcoming season. Making a guarantee in the past seemed to be a ritual in almost every other football city except for Seattle, where the players and coaches flew under the radar and went about doing business as usual. That was the case until Seahawk receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh recently made the mother of all guarantees.
For those of you who have been living under a rock (I am not literally saying you all live under rocks) Houshmandzadeh recently said or should I say guaranteed in an interview (and I am paraphrasing) that the Seahawks with his and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s help will make the playoffs, and that both will make the Pro Bowl as a tandem. He also added that he and Hasselbeck will both put up top 5 reciever and quarterback numbers. Here are my thoughts on “The Guarantee”:
After a 4-12 season, Seahawk fans like myself are looking for something to get excited about for the upcoming season, as if the addition of a non vanilla defensive coordinator wasn’t enough. Like most guarantees this one was aimed at pumping up the fans, but I feel that Houshmandzadeh may have done more than that. By making such a wild guarantee,he in my opinion gave the fans hope for the upcoming season, a reason to believe if you will, and God knows we Seahawk fans need something to get us excited for this upcoming season after the way things ended last year.
In the Mike Holmgren era statements like the one Houshmandzadeh made were very rare and almost non-existent. Don’t get me wrong Holmgren was a good coach one of the best, but a statement like this shows that the Seahawks are a changed team and are not as afraid to speak their minds as they were under Holmgren. Again I am not discounting the success that Holmgren brought to the Seahawks I am just saying that there appears to be much more excitement and swagger so far under Jim Mora.
It’s funny, I usually get mad at players from other teams for making guarantees like this one but call it a double standard if you want but I am not mad at Houshmandzadeh at all for making this bold and brash statement. A guarantee like this one doesn’t come out of nowhere; there must be something that the players are seeing in their mini camps that they think will translate into training camp and the regular season.
Anytime a statement like this is made fans get excited and hopeful that things will turn out the way they have been guaranteed. For his sake Houshmandzadeh better hope and pray that his bold prediction comes true.

To shake or not to shake, that is the question. For the last several weeks, this debate has been thrown upon the national sports scene as a result of the NBA, and NHL playoffs. It all started with Lebron James who was so frustrated with losing, decided to go immediately to the locker room rather than shake hands with his opponents. He was quoted as saying that, “it was hard to congratulate somebody after he just lost to them, I am a winner.”, “It’s not being a poor sport or anything like that.” “If somebody beats you up, You aren’t going to congratulate them.”
Than there is the NHL non shaking of the hands incident when Kris Draper called out Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, for snubbing some of the Red Wing players when he would not shake their hands after the Penguins defeated the Red Wings in the Stanley cup finals. In Crosby’s situation, he did eventually get in line and shake some of his opponents hands, but was late getting into the shaking line after being interviewed by the media and the big wigs on the ice. Why are people bothered by this?
For many throughout the sports scene, the act of not shaking hands a sign of poor character, being a sore loser. The concept of shaking hands after a game, is instilled in many athletes, early in their sports competition experience when they played little league baseball or park district football. Most, if not all, the high school sports have the ritual of players forming a line and shaking hands after contests. The question, to shake or not to shake? Is it really that big of a deal?
In the NFL it has been norm not to line up after a game and shake hands. I mean many opposing coaches meet before and after the game to shake hands, but many do not. Bill Parcells, former head coach of the Giants, Jets, Patriots, Cowboys and now the President of the Miami Dolphins has been quoted as saying that there were some games where he has told the other coach he wasn’t going to shake hands after a game to avoid the circus after the game. Does this make him, or her a bad sport?
Many feel the same way as Lebron James. Many athletes are too friendly on the court or the on the athletic field. Many opposing athletes these days are seen yucking it up before a game. Talking about whatever the subject of the day is. Well Joe hows your wife, and kids? Do you want to go to my charity event? Is the contest about making friends, or is it about winning the game. Does it matter whether an athlete shows sportsmanship immediately after the game or can they be congratulated in the locker room, or via email. Is it lack of character to hate losing so much that an athlete, that he was trying to beat his opponent, doesn’t want to shake hands after a contest? Many people do, some could care less. Is it about how an athlete competes, or is it about how an athlete handles defeat? It is a debate that will continue for years to come.

It has been way to long since the last blog and I have also been way to busy write one (with coaching, work and the new radio shows). Now, however, the time is right and I trust you will enjoy my babble. First off, what is up with the Minnesota Vikings and them courting Brett Favre? Give me a break, the Vikings are a divisional rival with the Bears and my love for them isn’t very high as it is, but now I must say I despise them even more.
Why must you put the sports world through another soap opera episode were the Vikings beg and beg and beg and in turn he seems to hold out until the price is right and he gets to miss mini-camp. I mean lets face it, this has been the Favre act for years. Who else remembers when” Mr. all time great” held the Packers hostage his last 7 years as a Packer? This whole thing is ridiculous. However last years drama topped the cake. How did that deal work out for you Brett?
The main motivation for his return is revenge (in many peoples minds and maybe even in Brett’s as well). How sweet it would be if he could come back and make the Packers NFL season miserable and knock them out of the lead league or even better the playoffs. However, many would say the whole Favre drama is his doing. How many years should a franchise as the Packers, put up with the contemplation of retirement only at the last minute, before the season is about to start, to say that he isn’t retiring. For the last 3 season he has made that big retirement statement, only to change his mind, and play once more. It was time for the Packers to turn to Rodgers and it was time for Favre to retire or end the relationship with the Packers, though he doesn’t seem to get the message. Brett Favre it’s time to hang it up!!!
Don’t get me wrong, if Brett wants to play, he should play. If a team wants to sign him, then a team should go ahead and sign him. But why should this drama play out year after year. I think this is Favre’s new addiction. I’m not even sure if this sickness has a name, but it could be deemed, “Center of attention syndrome”. If he is not front in center of the news, he makes a way so he can be, and for many, it is really getting old.
I can’t put a handle on why this on going drama bothers me so much. Maybe it is my dislike for him, being a Bear’s fan and all and for so long Favre ripping the Bears heart out year after year. Maybe actually a part of me respects him and sees Favre ruining a great career. Maybe it’s the fact he could be in the NFC North again. Though, how I would love seeing a Bears player hit Favre back into retirement again. In any case, it is just ashame that someone can’t decide when to hang it up. Does anyone remember the way Johnny Unitas ended his career. When it’s time it is time and there is no changing that no matter how much people try.

Hello, this is Bear fan Ron. Today, I thought I’d throw a change up and write about something from the world of sports. However, this won’t be about baseball, no sir. It will be about a rule change that was passed at the NFL Owners meeting this past February and will take effect in 2009 NFL season.
In recent years, it has been the NFL Rules committees mission to protect the defenseless players on the offensive side of the ball, IE: Quarterbacks and wide receivers. They have been doing this by penalizing helmet to helmet hits, late hits, or by penalizing a defensive player hitting an offensive player in a vulnerable position. For example, a quarterback that throws a pass and gets belted well after the ball has been released, or a wide receiver that has no chance of catching a pass and gets cracked by a linebacker across the middle. Well now it seems that the committee is worried about the defenseless, defensive player. That’s right, it may sound funny but it is true.
Now the committee has implemented a rule that effects an offensive player whom blindsides a defensive player on a block which now will result in a personal foul penalty. One example of this is when in the 08 season Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers threw a vicious blindsided block on linebacker Keith Rivers of the Cincinnati Bengals. The hit by Ward broke Rivers’ jaw and he missed the final nine games of his rookie season. It will sure be interesting to see how this rule change will effect the 2009 season.
It’s funny, all this talk about the NFL rule change has me thinking. Why is it that a league that represents a game that can be so brutal and violent is concerned about protecting the defenseless and that we as a nation continue to let the most defenseless of them all, namely the unborn child, be continually murdered year after year in and out of the womb. I hope that has you thinking as well.

It has two weeks since the Bears drafted in the NFL 2009 rookie draft. The draft started a few weeks early when the Bears traded two first round draft picks, a third round pick and Kyle Orton to the Broncos for quarterback Jay Cutler, and a Broncos fifth round pick. With that move alone you would have to deem the Bears draft a success. The Bears receive a proven, pro bowl QB, and an accurate, long throwing pea shooter. The Bears had more needs than just the quarterback position however. The top two positions on many fans and experts need lists were WR and Safety. In my previous blog I looked for the Bears to fill those positions of need with their draft picks. But, much of the time, when you feel you have the Bears figured out they always seem to surprise you. The Bears picked some WR’s but also picked some surprising positions in the draft as well.
With the Bears without a first round pick, the Bears went and traded their second round pick to the Seahawks for their 3rd through 5th round draft picks. With their first pick in the third round, the Bears went and drafted a DE out of San Jose State, Jarron Gilbert.
The Bears Then drafted a key piece of the puzzle(so it seems) in WR Juaquin Iglesias out of Oklahoma.
Both players were considered the best players available at the time they were drafted by the Bears. If that is the case, I have no problem with these choices but I am still concerned that the Bears may not needed much help at the DE position. Only time will tell.
In the fourth round, the Bears went and drafted another DE. Why? why? why? Another case of best player available? Well anyway his name is Henry Melton out of Texas. He is very explosive and should create a lot of pressure on the QB.
The Bears, with their second pick of the fourth round added depth to the CB position by adding D.J. Moore out of Vanderbilt. He is a very versatile player with great speed, instincts, and a great hitter.
In the fifth round the Bears choose, the up and coming WR Johnny Knox out of Abilene Christian. He is a WR and kick returner with great speed. Look for him to make an immediate impact on the Bears special teams unit. The other pick of the fifth round was Marcus Freeman LB out of Ohio State. To be honest, I am not sure why they drafted him. He is a decent LB with some skills but nothing the Bears don’t already have. The only thing I can think of is to add some depth to the special teams.
In the sixth round the Bears choose Safety Al Afalava out of Oregon State.Afalava is a hard hitting safety with great speed. He has been shaky in coverage but may be a diamond in the rough.
The Bears finished up the draft with two picks in the seventh round. They choose OG Lance Louis out of San Diego State and WR Derek Kinder out of Pitt.
According to many draft experts the Bears were able to get the best players available at the time they drafted. I feel the Bears were able to add depth and acquire people for the needs they had. The safety position still worries me and the WR position as well. They still need to find a #2 WR and a genuine FS. I give the Bears a grade of B for the 2009 rookie draft. It will be interesting to see if the Bears can land one or two more free agents after cuts are made to make room for the salary cap. Only time will tell.

Once again, Congress is showing their true colors; displaying for us all that they want to control every aspect of peoples lives, including sports. I know it may be odd starting a sports blog this way, but on Friday, in the House of Representatives hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee commerce, trade and consumer protection subcommittee, many congressmen demanded that the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) change their current format to a playoff system or face legislation that would move forward making the BCS to take the word “championship” out of the series name. Regardless of the feeling many may have toward the current BCS series format,(for or against a playoff system) is this congress’ role to make such legislation? Should congress dictate how a playoff/Championship is run?
The current BCS system is constructed with a championship game between the two top ranked teams determined by two polls (one poll is conducted by College coaches, and the other by sports reporters) and by six computer generated rankings.
During the hearing, John Swofford, the coordinator of the BCS went to great length explaining to Congress why the format was the way it was and how changing it would threaten the tradition of having the bowl games. Stafford went on to say, …It will be very difficult for any bowl game, including the current BCS bowls, which are among the oldest and most established in the games history to survive.” He went on to point out that all the revune used for the Bowl games would then go toward the playoff system.
How ridiculous is this? How far will Congress go? I mean how can Wheaties prove that their product is the,” Breakfast of Champions.” How could a local Chicagoland car dealership prove they were Champion Dodge of Villa Park? The possibilities are endless. What else could this power hungry committee dive into and try to affect. It’s just totally unreal. One congressmen compared the playoff system to Communism, and he is a Republican. Trust me, the BCS is far from communism, which unfortunately, we could find out very soon if this nation continues in the direction that this current Congress and President are taking us.

The Bears draft already started a few weeks back (in a way) when the Bears traded their first round pick(s) (for this season and the 2010 season) as well as this years third round pick and Kyle Orton, to the Denver Broncos for Jay Cutler and and their 5th round pick for this season. This draft has already been one wild and crazy ride for the Bears. The Bears getting Cutler is huge ( though I will still miss Orton).
They have a franchise QB with their first round picks which should bolster an average offense from last year. The Bears have made some other moves this off season by resigning RB Kevin Jones, and through free agency by signing Offensive Tackles, Orlando Pace from the Rams, Frank Omiyale from the Panthers and Kevin Shaffer from the Browns. They also inked Josh Bullocks, a safety, from the Saints, hoping he will help the Bears at very needy position right now. Unfortunately, I don’t think Bullocks is an answer to the safety position. Only time will tell.
Right now the Bears position of need is WR, and Safety. In the draft look for the Bears to pick up at least one or two players from those positions. Just a quick note on the draft from yesterday leading up to now, the Bears traded their second round pick to the Seahawks acquiring their third round, fourth round and fifth round draft picks for Sundays edition of the draft. More updates to follow.
